States Considering Presumptive Laws & Workers Compensation

Currently there is an ongoing dialogue between North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper and the leadership of the Union to improve workers compensation protection for Firefighters within the state. Governor Cooper stated during his attendance at the IAFF Legislative Conference that "We all know that firefighters face an increased risk of dying from cancer", and "In North Carolina we need to ensure that we enact legislation to provide firefighter's workers compensation for certain cancers". In Georgia, there was legislation that was passed through the State House of Representatives in 2016 that would identify certain cancers as job related and provide coverage for these injuries; however, it was vetoed by Governor Nathan Deal. Since that time, leaders within the Senate have worked with local governments to come up with an alternative mechanism for funding. Read more here.
